Welcome

The lab uses a multifaceted approach to study the ubiquitination proteasome system (UPS) and its role in plant development. These include generation of transgenic plants, analysis of knockout lines, proteomics, gene expression analyses and protein interaction studies. The highly conserved UPS effectively controls the abundance of regulatory proteins, thus allowing for adaptation to external stimuli and regulation of growth and development. Targeting a specific protein for degradation by the 26S proteasome involves the covalent attachment of ubiquitin to the target in a conjugation cascade involving the enzymes, E1, E2 and E3. Research in the lab focuses on a large family of E3 ligases which are defined by the presence of a RING domain. Dr. Stone's group attempts to address the importance of these RING-type E3s in plant development by verifying ligase activity, identifying interacting proteins and determining biological function.
